Notre Dame’s pass rush was getting after him, but McCord stood back there and delivered clutch, accurate throws to keep moving the football and deliver the win. On that drive, Ohio State faced a third-and-10, fourth-and-7 and third-and-19 and converted all of them. McCord led a 65-yard drive with 1:26 remaining and one timeout on the road that was capped by that 1-yard touchdown. First - and, perhaps more importantly – it saw first-year starting quarterback Kyle McCord step up in an unbelievable way. Ohio State found out a lot about itself Saturday night. This team right here showed toughness, they showed grit, they didn’t give up and they figured out a way to get that last yard.” But every game we play in, we’re physical. We had one bad half a couple of years ago in Ann Arbor. I am really upset and (feel) disrespected by what Lou Holtz said about our team and Ohio State and Buckeye nation. The way that our team played, not only did we physically get after these guys last year, but we did it here again at the end of this game. “A lot of people took a lot of shots with this team over the last 48 hours,” Day said. Why? Because Day “has lost to Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, Michigan twice and everybody who beats them does it because they are more physical than Ohio State.” What did Holtz do? He went on a long rant about how he believed Notre Dame - the program he coached to a national title in 1988 - was going to beat Ohio State. He showed the type of emotion that he’s kept hidden for a half-decade. When Day heard Holtz perpetuate what Day believes isn’t true, something snapped in him. Though you can’t question his competitiveness, he isn’t known for making a scene or getting fired up about, well, anything.īut softness? This team had become known for not being able to beat its less-talented archrival because it gets physically beat up until it taps out. Typically, he’s very low-key in news conferences. He’s won a lot of games as Ohio State’s coach and has lost a few tough ones, too. He has been around the block enough to know that how his program is perceived is his job. This is Day’s fifth year as Ohio State’s head coach. Day: It's Ohio State ‘against the world' after beating Notre Dame
